"The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me... to announce a year of favor from the Lord and a day of vindication by our God." - Isaiah 61:1-2
Rooted in Scriptural tradition and occurring only once every 25 years, a Jubilee Year is a sacred time for the renewal of the Church, with a special focus on fostering holiness in her members through reconciliation and communion. Special graces are offered in abundance to Catholics through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, pilgrimages, and the Jubilee Indulgence.
What is the Jubilee Indulgence?
The Jubilee Indulgence is a plenary indulgence offered every Jubilee Year, by merit of the Church's authority to dispense graces from her spiritual treasury. This plenary indulgence serves to remit all the temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven in confession, allowing one to experience a concrete manifestation of God's mercy. This indulgence can be gained for yourself, others on earth, or the holy souls in purgatory.
You can gain this indulgence as often as once a day this year, and up to twice a day if you receive Holy Communion a second time during a Eucharistic celebration and apply it to the souls in purgatory.
How Can I Gain the Jubilee Indulgence?
Pilgrimage The most common way to obtain the Jubilee Indulgence is through a pious pilgrimage to any sacred Jubilee site. In the Archdiocese of Portland, the pilgrimage sites are:
St. Mary's Cathedral, Portland

In addition to visiting an officially designated Jubilee Pilgrimage Site, one must also have the normal dispositions for obtaining a plenary indulgence:
- Make a Sacramental confession within 20 days - Be in a state of grace - Have complete detachment from all sin, including venial - Receive Holy Communion - Pray for the Pope's intentions (Our Father and Hail Mary)
